SOLD
To be free is very sweet”
SOLD is the story of Mary Prince and her journey to overcome the brutality of enslavement through the power of her indomitable spirit. Born into enslavement in the British Caribbean colony of Bermuda, Mary went on to become an abolitionist and autobiographer, highlighting the harsh realities of the brutality of being bought, owned and sold.
Her book was the first account of the life of a Black woman to be published in the United Kingdom and had a galvanising effect on the anti-slavery movement, exposing some of the intricacies of chattel slavery that are seldom heard.
Told through theatre, song, drumming and dance, SOLD is a masterpiece of Black British theatre inspired by the storytelling traditions of the West African griot.
The show flows straight into a Q&A session of 20 – 30 minutes if required.
“The show won Best Ensemble Theatre Award at Edinburgh, so our expectations were high, but nothing had prepared us for the sheer force of the creativity and the power of the production and performances” Audience Member
