George and the Drag Queen

With three actors, a changing set and Pipeline’s immersive soundscape, this show takes you on an unlikely, funny and poignant journey.

First aiders Maddie and George are working at the local village fete. They are joined by Elias, a Lebanese refugee who’s also a Drag Queen and a minor tv celebrity, who has been booked to open the fete. He’s been given the first aid tent to change in, much to his dismay. 

It’s George’s last event before he retires, and Maddie doesn’t want it spoiled by a stranger. But George is distracted by intrusive thoughts from his past, particularly the realisation that he worked in disaster relief in Elias’s home-town. Meanwhile Elias waits to find out if his homeland is safe and whether he must go back.

The play combines humour, warmth, historical fantasy and multi role madness as well as personal histories and political tensions to expose the complexities of modern debates around migration, gender identity, and community and how people can become caught between compassion and prejudice, loyalty and fear, while grasping for understanding and connection.
