Oving Scarecrow Day
“The highlight of my year – Oving Scarecrow Day, the best (all free) event I’ve been to – the whole village takes part, with a scarecrow competition in the surrounding homes and so many events spread around the village… Steel band, tractor rides, archery, classic cars, ferret racing and a music festival at the pub (Gribble Inn) so many food & craft stalls to name a few. The icing on the cake for me was winning first prize in the raffle – a massive scarecrow cake!”
Each year Oving Scarecrows mounts a celebratory family focused event which reaches into our whole community, we attract an increasing number of visitors as our reputation for delivering a fantastic day spreads ever wider. One of our key aims is to ensure no-one is excluded from participating, so, not only is everyone who organises and helps deliver the day a volunteer, but we also raise sponsorship, mostly from local businesses, but also from supporter pledges so that we can provide most of our family activities free or at subsidised prices. Refreshments will be available both in the Jubilee Hall and in the Church grounds.
The scarecrows are placed all round our small village in people’s gardens and around the Church which has scarecrows outside it that have been made mostly by various youth groups. Disabled access is along a slightly sloping path and there is a ramp into the Church itself. This year there will also be a guest scarecrow area where non-residents can bring their scarecrows to display. Oving itself is fairly flat and level so suitable throughout for wheelchair users.
A great day out at Oving Scarecrow Day continues to be fantastic value for money, particularly for families.
