Applause works with artists and communities to bring exceptional arts to familiar local spaces. Our Autumn 22 – Spring 23 season focusses on touring shows to village halls and community centres across Kent and Sussex alongside some seasonal outdoor shows. We work with brilliant performing companies and a network of local volunteer promoters to offer the very best of touring theatre, music, storytelling, puppetry and children’s shows, giving audiences direct access to live performance on their rural doorstep.
If you’ve a ready-made show that is technically adaptable and ideally self-contained, and you’re able to be flexible and work in a wide variety of spaces please take a look at the requirements below and then submit your application.
For our Indoor programme we tour a range of exciting and inspiring shows including adaptations of classic drama, delightful puppetry for families, humorous storytelling, new writing, imaginative adaptations of much loved children’s books, contemporary dance and a range of music for all tastes from classical, folk and jazz to Latin rumbas, Cajun and country. The emphasis is on quality, because the promoters and venues work hard to make these performances happen, so they deserve it.
For 2022 we are particularly interested to hear from companies that are touring a seasonal show for families or that can be enjoyed by all ages in December and early January.
We are also looking for some seasonal outdoor shows that can bring some festive flair to local events such as Christmas lights switch ons, Xmas markets, school fetes, shopping centres and high-streets.
Applause is committed to equality of opportunity and welcomes applications from individuals or companies, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexuality, social background, religion and/or belief.
If you’re interested in rural touring and can meet our requirements we’d love to hear from you.
Applications need to be made via our online registration platform Eventotron. Click on the link and either login or register for an account.
Touring 1 Sep 2022 – 3 Jun 2023. Deadline for applications 11 March 2022.
Being included on our touring season (Village halls/community spaces)
Most artists (particularly those based in the local region) prefer to offer general availability over a period of months (e.g. Oct – Dec). The offer of ‘general availability’ increases the chances of getting bookings, because it increases the choice of dates for promoters.
Alternatively, we ask companies to ‘pencil’ a run of 3-4 consecutive dates with an artist (usually Thu – Sat). These dates are reserved exclusively for Applause bookings for a number of weeks – usually around 6 – 8 weeks. If after that time the dates have not been converted to actual bookings, they can be returned to the artist so they can sell them elsewhere.
Once our promoters have received the Indoor programme, they consult with their various committees and hall management teams etc. and decide which shows/artists they would like to book and on what date.
It is important to note that inclusion on our programme does not guarantee bookings. It all depends on the personal preferences of promoters/ venues for that season in deciding what they would like to book.
Any artist included in our programme may need to provide publicity material usually 250 flyers and 20 empty belly posters, but this can be adapted depending on an individual promoter’s requirements. This is only required of our indoor shows.
Publicity should be received by the promoter at least 8 weeks prior to the show date, in order that there is adequate time to sell tickets.
Samples of the posters and flyers should also be sent to Applause so we can produce overprinted labels for the promoter, with specific show details.
Shows need to be technically adaptable and ideally self-contained, and artists have to be flexible and able to work in a wide variety of spaces. Artists need to have a keen interest in rural touring and be willing to work closely with our promoters to ensure the show is successful.
Artists are paid their full professional fee for Applause performances, but is important to be realistic about how much you charge. Applause does not cover accommodation and travel costs, these should be factored in when calculating your fee.
