Applause Rural Touring in collaboration with Gravesham Borough Council have commissioned Leicester based outdoor theatre company Enter Edem to develop a new walkabout show for outdoor touring in 2025. The show will be developed with the local community and shared with all at the Gravesham Light Festival in January 2025.
As part of our commitment to supporting the development of local artists this project offers two artist development roles to support local practitioners interested in developing skills as both performers and makers of small-scale outdoor work.
We are looking for artists living/working in Gravesham, Kent who are interested in the following:
- Performance creative role: For a local artist/performer to be part of the Enter Edem team to develop the show and perform in Gravesham and then to become part of the delivery team for the wider tour across the summer
- Makers/facilitator’ creative role: For a local practitioner to be part of the facilitating/making team on the puppet making workshops to work with the director in developing the Krill puppets in the studio be part of the build/puppetry fabrication skills ahead of the facilitating sessions down in Gravesham.

Performer/creative wanted
We are looking for a budding rural touring performer to join our creative team for the development of a new co-creation project with Applause Rural Touring and Gravesham Borough Council ‘Aquanauts Adrift.’
This is an opportunity to become part of the Enter Edem team as a cast member for the new touring outdoor act, that focuses on encouraging the audience’s interest in ocean life and our human connection with the microscopic world of Plankton. You will be part of the team who will create a highly physical and interactive performance of deep-sea divers, using elements of clowning, mime, puppetry, audio technology and bubbleology. The creation of the work will include a premiere performance with mass community participation and ongoing touring with Enter Edem and Applause Rural Touring throughout 2025 along with potential future performance work with Enter Edem.
Key information:
Be available for an initial creation phase of the project during Sep-Oct 2024 working in Enter Edem’s studio, based in Leicester
(2 days initial development, dates to be set with creative team, fees £120 per day plus travel, accommodation with host Enter Edem.)-
Be available for a further co-creation phase taking place in Gravesham during Jan 2025
(1 day community cast rehearsal and 2 days performance, between 23rd-25th Jan, fees £180 per day.)
Eligibility to apply:
- Be based in Gravesham or surrounding area
- Have experience or interest in performing outdoors and for family audiences in a variety of Rural settings
- Wishing to up-skill or looking for a starting position with Enter Edem
- Be registered self-employed and pay own tax and NI
- Be available to tour work over weekends and potential weekdays throughout 2025 (across all Applause Rural Touring locations, Essex, Kent and Sussex, with potential further touring work across the UK.
- While no formal training is needed, previous public performance experience at any level (professional or amateur) will be considered
Maker/facilitator wanted!
Keen maker and facilitator wanted for the opportunity to become part of the Enter Edem
team in community workshop delivery for a new touring outdoor act. Aquanauts Adrift focuses on encouraging an interest in ocean life and our human connection with the microscopic world of Plankton. The role will be to assist in the delivery of community workshops creating Plankton puppets with recycled materials, which will be shared as part of a premiere performance with mass community participation. Potential for ongoing workshop delivery as part of touring work with Applause Rural Touring throughout 2025.

Be available to support community relationship building across Gravesham and to attend a basic puppetry making training day with the Enter Edem team during Sep-Oct 2024

- Enthusiasm and interest in working with all ages and abilities
