More about us:
Applause: For more than 10 years Applause has commissioned new outdoor performance to tour across the South East. Applause Rural Touring will be programming outdoor performances into existing, locally organised village fetes, community events and Festivals in Kent and East and West Sussex. These events take place almost exclusively at weekends from May to September. The new commission will be part of the ART 2020 Outdoor season.

Home Live Art produce live events across Hastings, the South East and beyond. From the large scale spectacular to the intimate encounter, they bring audiences and artists together to create extraordinary shared experiences.

In June 2019 Home Live Art launched the Knotty Festival, a unique and adventurous festival of performance that took place across a wide-range of locations in Hastings and Bexhill (including a theatre, a hidden garden, an arts centre, a gallery space and a party bar).

This commission will be part of the Knotty Festival 2020 programme.

Please see Home Live Art website for more details on Knotty 2019.

What we are looking for:
This is an exciting opportunity to create an outdoor work that can be placed into existing events in rural locations including – locally organised village fetes, community events and local festivals.

We are looking for artists/companies that are interested in creating bold and thought-provoking work that will engage these audiences in new and exciting ways.

We are particularly interested in work that responds in some way to the context in which it will be presented.

It can be a totally new idea or the development/up-scaling of a past project.

The form of the work can be walk-about, interactive installation or static production

We encourage artists from a wide-range of disciplines to apply – including live art, cabaret, activism, experimental theatre, installation, dance, sound and visual art.

Home Live Art and Applause Touring are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals or companies, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexuality, social background, religion and/or belief.

We understand that rural touring may have extra challenges for some artists and therefore we may need to have a different approach and provide extra support. Please contact Katy – katy@homeliveart.com to discuss any barriers you feel may stop you from applying.

Please read the following requirements carefully before applying:

Applause Rural Touring Requirements:
Technical Production
The finished piece must be self-sufficient.

Work will be placed in a variety of community settings including events that can provide very little technical or other support – This means that all technical requirements (including equipment and operators) for the work will have to be provided by the artist/companies.

Audience
Your piece will have to fit around other events in the host event programmes so please consider whether you require the audience to arrive at a certain time and remain for a set amount of time.

It must be suitable for non-age specific audiences

Ideally static productions will be no more than 25mins in length and will be performed multiple times in one day.

Applause Rural Touring Bookings
Applause will be responsible for booking a place and date for your performance but the artist/company will then be responsible for making specific arrangements and finalising details with host venues and promoters.

Availability
Your performance must be ready and available for touring from the end of April. You need to have very good availability for weekends throughout May to September 2020 and prioritise dates for Applause within an agreed time frame for performances in Kent and Sussex.

We will expect most of the development work to take place between November 2019 and March/April 2020. Applause will require evidence (photos and / or video) of the work undertaken and to see work in progress. Companies will be required to submit regular updates both during development and while on tour. Applause will provide support and practical advice regarding touring work in rural settings during the development process.

Finance
Commission fee up to £4000 – must include materials

Applause Touring Fee: £350 – £650 per performance depending on size of company. Fees must be fully inclusive of all VAT, accommodation and travel. (Any enquiries/bookings Applause receives outside of the Applause Outdoors region (Kent, Sussex) they will discuss appropriate rates with you).
