Applause has collaborated with Pentabus Theatre Company and New Perspectives to bring Make Good to Southborough, offering local people the chance to experience this exciting new production.
Make Good: The Post Office Scandal is directly informed by conversations with affected sub-postmasters involved in the UK’s most widespread miscarriage of justice and reveals the startling turn of events that led to the wrongful conviction of 900 sub-postmasters for crimes they did not commit.
Applause’s Programming Lead Sally Lampitt said: “We are very excited to welcome the only musical which documents what happened to these innocent people. We all followed the news stories with disbelief about this important part in our country’s social history. Theatre brings these kinds of stories to life in a way which really helps us to empathise with all those affected.”
‘The musical is full of feeling. And that’s what we need to portray to people now, so that they can feel and understand what we felt, all the heartache that we went through. The songs bring so much to the story, they’re heartfelt and there’s humour in it too, it’s funny. ‘ Sub-postmaster
The show is written by Jeanie O’Hare, who commissioned the hit show Matilda the Musical and Jim Fortune, who has composed many shows for the National Theatre, including Hex and My Brilliant Friend.
Between 1999 and 2015, the Post Office and Crown Prosecution Service took nearly 1000 innocent sub-postmasters to court on false accounting and theft charges. It was later proven that a computer system error had caused the financial inaccuracies, but by then many had been given prison sentences and been financially ruined.
Make Good: The Post Office Scandal will be performed at the Unity Hall, Southborough Civic Centre on Friday 25th October at 8pm. Tickets are £12 and available from the Applause website https://applause.org.uk/whats-on/make-good-the-post-office-scandal/
